SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, I know that doesn’t tell you anything!

Basically, it’s the process of tweaking (or optimising) your website for search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

Let me paint a picture: You go to Google and type in something you’re looking for, let’s say ‘monkey bars.’ The search results that pop up are ones that have included the keywords ‘monkey bars’ throughout their website, and have a website that has been SEO optimised.

Here’s how it works…

Search engines read everything on your website, every word, every image title, every single thing. It then uses the information found on your website to judge whether or not your content is going to be useful to people searching for it. If your content is great and you’ve ticked all the SEO boxes, you’re going to rank high in search results.

When it comes to SEO, content is QUEEN.

There are also a lot of other factors involved, some simple, some highly technical. But there’s a lot you can do to make sure your website covers the basics.

Your goal with SEO is to have your website ranking on the first page of search results, and even better, in the top three spots. You’re more likely to drive traffic to your website and attract new customers this way.

Let’s break down some of the SEO terms you might see:

SEO – Search Engine Optimisation (explained above).

Technical SEO – this is when you optimise the technical aspects of your website, for example, how quickly your website loads and if it is mobile-friendly.

On-site SEO – this is when you optimise the content on your website and how easy it is to navigate (it’s all about the user experience - UX).

Off-site SEO – this is about building a strong online reputation outside of your website, for example, having backlinks which are other websites that link to yours, or online reviews.

SERP – Search Engine Results Page (the page you see when you search something).

SEM – Search Engine Marketing (this is often paid marketing like Google Ads to make sure your website is shown when specific keywords are searched).

PPC – Pay Per Click (a type of digital marketing where you only pay for the ad when someone clicks on it).
